The town and port of Tazacorte is spread along a coastal strip of the fertile valley of Aridane, with a surface area of 12 sq. Km.. - making it the smallest municipality of the island. It has a population of 6,900 inhabitants. Until 1925 it formed part of the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane, and was made into a separate municipality by King Alfonso XIII by Royal Decree. On September 29 1492 Spanish troops disembarked on these coasts led by Adelantado Fernández de Lugo, thus beginning the conquest of the island. King Tazo died heroically defending his people (known as the Court of King Tazo). Since the conquest, due to the prevailing climate and the abundance of water from the springs at La Caldera de Taburiente, this lands, ideal for farming, have been cultivated intensively, firstly with sugar-cane and nowadays with bananas. The most important banana plantations on the island can be found here, and they are so extensive that they appear to be a sea of perennial green. Fishing is the other traditional activity of this region, firmly established in the port where there is a fishing quay, a great tourist attraction. |
