LOS LLANOS DE ARIDANES is situated on the west coast of the island, in the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane, with El Paso and Tazacorte it is to be found in the valley of the same name. It is one of the most important banana-growing zones of the Canarian archipelago. Before the Spanish conquest it was called the Canton of Aridane, and was governed by the king Mayantigo. It has a surface area of 36 sq.km.and more than 18,000 inhabitants. The town centre is situated at an altitude of 325m and is the main economic and commercial centre of the island. Los Llanos grew under the shadow of a rich feudal estate, El Llano de Argual, which gradually became a prosperous township. One of the reasons for its economic development of banana plantations, which covers more than 1,500 hectares of bananas and more than 100 hectares of avocados. The historical development has changed this shape of the zone, which now has wide avenues and a modern urban layout. Fortunately it also still has some small streets, squares and corners which retain the charm and peacefulness of former times. This is a really lovely area and a must to visit. |
