This large municipality is situated on the northern slope between Barlovento and Puntagorda, with its 100 sq. m. it forms the second largest in surface area in the island. Its craggy slopes, shaped into steep gorges and passes, its sudden cliff edges, perforated by the strong north sea, all create an exceptional landscape. The tortuous orographic conditions here make moving around on land difficult, creating a sense of relative isolation and causing the emigration of much of the population. Nowadays there are not more than 2,000 inhabitants, with the main source of income being from cattle and agriculture. Thanks to its large cattle livestock, more recently replaced by goats, Garafia is the main producer of cheeses on the island, which are considered among the best in the Canaries. On its middle levels, potatoes, fruit and vegetables are cultivated. On higher levels, due to the inaccessibility of the land, enormous forests of laurisilva and the finest specimens of Canarian pines have been preserved. of relative isolation having the effect of local people leaving for else-where , so the current population is only about 2,000. |
