Traditionally an agricultural area, potato production on middle levels was its normal way of life until the discovery and development of underground streams in the 1960s transformed large areas of the coast into irrigated land which has since been used for banana production.
The efforts of the Palmeran farmers can be seen here at their greatest, as they have transformed steep slopes into cultivatable land, through the construction of many large terraces.
